In a captivating start to the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s U21 World Championship, Serbia’s young team demonstrated their strength and determination by securing a resounding 3-0 victory over China in Leon, Mexico. Despite the absence of key players, the European contingent showcased exceptional teamwork and adaptability on the court.

The highly anticipated tournament, featuring 16 national teams from various corners of the globe, is set to unfold until August 26 across the vibrant Mexican cities of Leon and Aguascalientes. For avid volleyball enthusiasts, the thrilling matches are being streamed live on the Volleyball World YouTube channel, ensuring that fans worldwide can experience the excitement firsthand.

Facing a formidable opponent in China, Serbia approached their opening match with unwavering focus and determination. The team’s triumph was marked by set scores of 26-24, 25-21, and 26-24, showcasing their exceptional skill and resilience. Remarkably, Serbia achieved this victory despite the absence of seven eligible players, each with their unique contributions, who were unavailable due to participation in the senior team or injuries.

Head coach Vladimir Vasović acknowledged the inherent challenges of an opening match, particularly against an opponent like China known for their fast-paced and strategic gameplay. Nevertheless, the Serbian team displayed a commendable level of resilience and strategic thinking, effectively overcoming obstacles throughout the match. This was especially evident during their impressive comeback in the first set.

In the city of Aguascalientes, Italy’s team kicked off their Pool B campaign with an impressive performance, defeating Tunisia 3-0. Outside hitter Stella Nervini notably stood out with her remarkable contribution of 15 points, significantly influencing Italy’s victory. Meanwhile, in another match within Pool B, Brazil demonstrated their prowess by securing a 3-0 victory over the Dominican Republic, where the combined efforts of players like Helena Wenk and Juliana Gandra proved pivotal.

Opposite player Abigail Mullen, who had contributed to the American team’s gold win at the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U19 World Championship just the week prior, stood out once again with her match-high 12 points.
